Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening cup on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match featuring the French league champions and the French Cup holders after the French winger found the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to seize a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial leveler in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty win.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen years.
