A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
