A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been told to refrain from talking about secret information in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for Defence Staff
During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.
He explained that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
